Let’s dive right into The Guide To Cannabis: Part 3

The variety of products available has never been greater. Cannabis products can be smoked, eaten, applied to the skin, dabbed or vaped. However, quality and potency standards can be inconsistent. The strength of cannabis products varies between strains and products. The same dosage can affect two individuals very differently.

Fortunately, there is virtually no threat of a fatal overdose. But it is entirely possible to go overboard which happens to most cannabis users at least once in their lifetime. Every substance is toxic if you consume it in excess. Even carrots and bananas can have negative physiological effects if you consume high volumes of them. The same is true of cannabis.

While it is impossible to overdose on cannabis, there can be some very unwelcome side effects from high THC levels. These include anxiety and paranoia.

Signs you’ve had too much

1. A “white-out”.

A white-out is a side effect of acute cannabis intoxication. The colour drains rapidly from the face, followed by weakness, nausea or vomiting and even temporary unconsciousness. The symptoms are generally short-lived. It’s good to have a sweet drink or snack and then sit or lie down. It should only take a few minutes for feelings of nausea and dizziness to subside.

2. The shakes

3. Cottonmouth

4. High levels of anxiety and paranoia

5. Panic attack

6. Rapid heart rate

7. Extreme confusion and memory problems, difficulty conversing

8. Poor coordination

9. High or low blood pressure

10. Nausea and vomiting

11. Hallucinations

What to Do If You Consume Too Much Cannabis?

  1. Remain calm, talk yourself down and remind yourself that the symptoms will pass and you will feel much better in about half an hour.
  2. Find a safe, quiet space to relax, preferably with a trusted person.
  3. Distract yourself by watching TV, listening to soothing music or taking a nap
  4. Have a shower or bath and try to enjoy the feeling of the water.
  5. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
  6. Have a sweet snack or drink to raise your blood sugar
  7. A large 50-200mg dose of CBD (without significant amounts of THC) can act as a partial antidote.
  8. Lemon oil, found predominantly in the rind and in lower amounts in the juice, has also been used. Grate a tablespoon of lemon zest and chew it up before swallowing.

How to use cannabis responsibly?

To use cannabis safely and avoid overconsumption, it’s important to be mindful of your own tolerance levels. Familiarize yourself with the dosage instructions and always start off with the smallest possible dose. For novice users, we recommend 5mg. Start slowly and wait an hour or two before your next dose.
